I am starting to get this error again.  :-(

This thing is getting on my last nerve.  Argh.

I wouldn't say that it helps :) I does make a big difference though.

You can delete bbdef-server.sh again. Version "c" pre-dates the
split client and server installs. You can probably comment out
that line in lard-config.pl again too. That would probably have
been set correctly with reference to the makefile.

In order to stop the conversion of "&" to "_", you will need to
re-compile BB with the -DNOTAMP flag.
