AFAIK, it should be the same. Where the clients are concerned, they
need to have both primary and failover listed as BBPAGER and BBDISPLAY
so that "page" and "status" messages are sent to both. For whatever
reason, the purple status of the client tests indicates that those
messages are not currently getting to the failover machine. This is
all the more confusing because those messages appear to have been
sent successfully when the failover machine was configured as the
primary.

That would be my understanding too. Another point that is difficult
to understand, is that the "conn" status of each host on the failover
display is green. There shouldn't be any difference between that test
and any other network test. I would expect it to be an "all or nothing"
deal.
What I would do next it to investigate those green "conn" web pages
on the failover display. Check that the "last update" time (in the
top right of the page) is current and the "Status message received
from" line (just above the HISTORY button) shows the IP of the
primary BB server.
One possible cause of problems are Windows style line terminators in
bb-hosts (and other BB config files). Have you edited any BB files
on a Windows machine? The normal way to check this is to load the
bb-hosts file into "vi" and check for the extra "^M" characters at
the end of each line. This is complicated by some recent versions of
"vi" (like "vim") which automatically enter DOS mode (and show "[dos]"
on the status like at the bottom) which will hide the extra line
terminators. In this case, you should be able to start in "binary"
mode with "vi -b bb-hosts".
Cheers, Phil.
