Historically, this appears to have resulted from running an older perl
binary with newer libraries. This thread does not have a conclusion, but
it might provide some insight:

As a first step, I would confirm that the binary that Larrd is using is
the one from version 5.8.7.
Another culprit can be an old libperl.so in somewhere like /usr/lib,
rather than within the perl directory tree.
