It certainly sounds like the zombie problem, but you should post
the operating system (with version number) that you are using.
If the ZOMBIE compile flag is required, it is likely that someone
else will have had the same problem before and can confirm that.

Next, assuming that this is the answer, you will need to work out
why BB in not updating when you do compile with the ZOMBIE flag.
I would assume, from your post, that the (expected) BB processes 
still run, but the status log files are not updated. If so, is
there any interesting output in the BBOUT file? If there are
no error messages, you might need to enable debugging output
in bbd.c. That will dump copious information on BBOUT, however,
so don't run it for too long.
