I don't think that the previous bug (which rejected some valid
connections) has anything to do with this. It appears to be yet more
Redhat specific weirdness. So far, there has been only that one other
report (on WS), so it's now looking as if it may affect all RHEL
variants.

You should be able to produce a similar effect using iptables or other
firewall software. Just restrict connections to port 1984 to the
networks (or hosts) that you need.
