I don't know if this is the cause of your problem, but it will not be
helping. The ideal situation is to have the same version of BB
throughout your installation. Effort has been made to ensure that
old(er) clients should sill work with new servers (for a while),
but mixed server versions can be unpredictable.
One possible cause of problems is the combo message format, which
1.9e will support but 1.8b3 knows nothing about. In your position,
I would update all your servers to the latest version before
digging any deeper. It sound like a lot of trouble, but it is
likely to be easier than you expect and much less work than
debugging the problem.

That sounds strange. Are you using mixed case letters in your hostnames
by any chance. Where BB (and Unix in general) is concerned, "Name" does
not match "name" or "NAME". This often trips up those with a MS
background.
Cheers, Phil.
