I don't know of a GIF that is actually white, but the clear one will
look white on a white background.

If the GIF periodically disappears, I would check the web server logs
to see what it is trying to display. If it is displaying a GIF that
looks white or clear, but the page source indicates that it should be
using green.gif, I would try viewing the page in a variety of different
browsers to ensure that your one is not being flaky.

Does this problem rectify itself on a subsequent update, or do you
need to re-start the sever to eliminate it?
