OK, that sounds reasonable. Another option might be to test
such things in batches instead of all at one go, but that
would probably be better done with a custom script. Still,
it's probably because I'm old enough to remember when RAM
was expensive that I would look for ways to keep things
small :)

Ouch! That is slow. When this starts, the problem can have a
tendency to get progressively worse as increasing numbers of
test runs overlap.

If this is a script from the Deadcat web-site, the author may
have already added some debugging output that can be switched
on by setting a flag. If this is your own creation, I would
add output to track the running time and try and identify
why it is so slow.
Another thing that you could do is to modify the script so
that it creates a semaphore file on start-up and will not
run a second copy until the first one completes. You could
also run the script less frequently than the default and
increase the "time to live". In your place, I would start
by running it every 15 minutes and let the status remain
valid for 45 minutes or 1 hour.
