Hopefully the old e-mails will have stopped by now but, to answer your
initial query, BB does not have an internal mail queue. It will use
the locally configured mail system which is often a local Mail
Transport Agent (MTA), such as Sendmail. That could have been
responsible for queueing the messages. Since you have a failover
server, that could also be the source.

If you need to work out exactly what was happening, you should
check the e-mail headers of one of the messages. Each machine
that the mail passes through should add a "Received:" line with
a timestamp. That should allow you to work out where it came
from, where it went and how long it took to get there.
