As far as the actual cause, maybe not being able to do stuff in /tmp...

Also just noticed the error message
http://enki.gsd.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/bb-hostsvc.sh?HOSTSVC=atlas,gsd,harvard,edu.disk

Notice it has no disks listed in the body of the message like,
say, 
http://enki.gsd.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/bb-histlog.sh?HOST=atlas.gsd.harvard.edu&SERVICE=disk&TIMEBUF=Thu_Oct_5_09:46:22_2006

So it's really looking like a side-effect of resource starvation.
