i got the following results,

 

 > export BBHOME=/home/bb/bbc1.9g-btf/
> . etc/bbdef.sh
 > eval "$DFCMD | $EGREP \"$DFUSE\" | $EGREP -v \"$DFEXCLUDE\" | $SORT \"+${DFSORT}\" > $BBTMP/DFOUT.$$"
/bin/sort: open failed: +4: No such file or directory
 

 

even with the above error it did create a blank DFOUT file and sort is found in the bin directory.

That is what's achieved by the line:

. etc/bbdef.sh

(note the initial dot). It reads the specified script into the
current shell and sets the required environment variables.
