That helps to rule out some potential problems.

This would suggest that there may be a network issue. The chances
of multiple independent clients having their own problems at the
same time is vanishingly small.
One thing that you should confirm is that these machines are running
the client software from a local disk and not an NFS mount. If they
were, and the NFS server had a problem, that might cause a problem
like this.

What does that error message on the client say. Is is something like:
Mon Oct 23 13:10:39 2006 bb-local.sh Mon Oct 23 13:10:39 2006 bb
CAN'T CONNECT TO bbd SERVER @ 123.456.78.90
That would tend to confirm that there is a network problem. You should
test the connection by running something like the following from the
client machine (but using your BB server IP number):
telnet 123.456.78.90 1984
What should happen is that the connection should remain open for a few
seconds and then close automatically. If the connection is not made, or
closes immediately, it would suggest that there is a routing problem
or a firewall configuration issue that is preventing the client from
contacting the BB server.
