RE: {bb} LARRD and memory
Thanks. I've taken your advice and gone with option B. I already get the memory (mem for Windows servers) button accumulate statistics. In bbdef-server.sh I've included the DATAMSG argument like so:
RUNOPTS="EMBEDHTML","DATAMSG"
export RUNOPTS
I've added the bb-memory package from Deadcat on my SuSE and Red Hat ES 4 servers and it works. I've added "memory" in larrd-config.pl like so:
@DATALIST=("la","disk","memory","bbnet","vmstat","netstat","procs","users","up","WebApp")
I've placed memory-larrd.pl in the ext directory and it's been added to the bb-bbextab list. After restarting Big Brother, I've checked LARRDOUT and find these errors coming up:
/usr/local/larrd/memory-larrd.pl: ERROR creating /home/bbrother/bb/bbvar/rrd/donkeyhead.css.gov.real.rrd: you must define at least one Data Source
Any ideas?

I don't remember having to play with these before, but that might
be because it was too traumatic. In any case, most of what follows
is very likely to be wrong.
For the stuff that is not part of "standard" BB, you have two
options when getting Larrd to graph it:
A. Use third-party extensions to send the client data and an
additional Larrd script on the server to create the graphs.
B. Use the Larrd "bottom feeder" scripts to send the client
data.
If you go with option B, you then have two options about how
to send the data.
1. As a normal "status" message, which will create another
column on the display.
2. As a "data" message, which generates no column and requires
you to change RUNOPTS in bbdef-server.sh to include DATAMSG.
If want to monitor a mixture of OS's and are interested in
receiving alerts based on memory status, it looks like the
"bb-memory" package (from Deadcat) is probably the way to
go. Once you have the appropriate script running on each
client, it should only be necessary to add "memory" to
DATALIST in larrd-config.pl in most cases.
However, meaningful statistics for memory usage are notoriously
difficult to produce across different operating systems. There
are many situations where some tweaking will be required.
Cheers, Phil.
