although my knee-jerk "blame exchange" reaction was wide of the mark.
The executive summary is that your local Mail User Agent (most probably
"nail" pretending to be something else) is most likely be treating the
data as binary. Your options include:

1. Hack the source to give the MUA what it wants.
2. Hack the scripts to translate to what the MUA wants.
3. Call the MUA with different options (if available) so
   that it is better behaved.
4. Change MUA and use an alternative which plays nice with
   BB.
